Packing cubes: are they really worth it? How to use them well

Yes, packing cubes are useful, as long as you know what they really do. They won't shrink your clothes, but they give each category of items a fixed place, so you can find what you need without emptying your suitcase.

They don't suit every trip. Here's how to tell whether they'll help you, and how to use them well.

What exactly is a packing cube?

A packing cube is a soft, zippered pouch that goes inside your suitcase. It's also called a luggage organizer or travel pouch.

The idea is simple: instead of piling clothes loosely, you group them by category. T-shirts together. Underwear together. Shoes separate.

There are two main types:

  • Mesh cubes: they have some depth and a see-through panel. You can see what's inside without opening them.
  • Flat bags: thinner, they're for small items, shoes or dirty laundry.

Are packing cubes really worth it?

For most travelers, yes. But not for the reasons you often read.

What do they actually change?

  • You find everything faster. You take out one pouch, not the whole suitcase.
  • Your suitcase stays tidy. Day two looks just like day one.
  • You repack in a few moves. Each pouch goes back in its place.
  • You keep clean and dirty apart. No more plastic bags that tear.
  • You switch bags easily. Suitcase at the hotel, backpack for a night elsewhere: just move one or two pouches.

What don't they do?

  • They don't make your suitcase lighter. They actually add a little weight. If your allowance is tight, check your airline's limits in our guide to cabin and checked baggage weight and size by airline.
  • They don't magically create space. They organize the space you have. How you fold is what saves room.
  • They're not all waterproof. A mesh pouch won't protect against a leaking bottle.

The problem: every morning at the hotel, you dig for a T-shirt at the bottom of the suitcase and everything ends up on the bed. The solution: the set of 6 luggage organizer pouches, one pouch per category, so you grab the right one and close the lid.

Who benefits most from packing cubes?

It all depends on how you travel.

Your profileUseful?Why
Road trip or tour, several hotelsVery usefulYou repack often. The pouches save time at every stop.
Family or couple, one suitcaseVery usefulOne color or pouch per person: everyone finds their own things.
Carry-on onlyUsefulSpace is tight. Everything needs its place.
Sports or mountain tripUsefulYou separate technical gear, everyday clothes and wet items.
Weekend, one hotelLess essentialYou unpack once. One or two pouches are enough.

How do you use packing cubes well?

Five simple rules are all you need.

1. One pouch = one category, not one day

Pack by type of item: tops, bottoms, underwear, sleepwear. It's easier to repack than a day-by-day system. The one exception: a short trip where you prepare full outfits.

2. Should you roll or fold your clothes?

Both work. Roll T-shirts, leggings and soft clothes: they fit snugly in a cube. Fold shirts and wrinkle-prone pieces flat, and put them in the largest pouch.

3. Large pouches at the bottom, small ones on the sides

Lay the largest pouches flat at the bottom of the suitcase. Slip the small ones into the remaining gaps along the edges. Shoes go in a flat bag, on the wheel side.

4. Don't overstuff them

An overfilled pouch strains the zipper and is hard to fit in. Fill it without forcing the zip.

5. Keep an empty flat bag for dirty laundry

Leave with a flat bag folded at the bottom of the suitcase. Dirty laundry goes in as the trip goes on. Back home, empty that bag straight into the washing machine.

The problem: on the way home, dirty laundry gets mixed with clean clothes and shoes. The solution: the set of 6 travel pouches includes 3 flat bags: one for shoes, one for dirty laundry, one for small items.

Which pouch for what? Example with a set of 6

Here's one possible way to use our set (3 mesh pouches + 3 flat bags).

PouchDimensionsWhat to put in it
Large mesh pouch37 × 27 × 12 cmTrousers, sweaters, folded shirts
Medium mesh pouch30 × 22 × 12 cmRolled T-shirts, sportswear
Small mesh pouch20 × 15 × 12 cmUnderwear, socks, swimsuit
Large flat bag33 × 23 cmShoes or dirty laundry
Medium flat bag27 × 19 cmPajamas, accessories
Small flat bag17 × 13 cmSmall items: belt, glasses, chargers

The mesh pouches are not waterproof. Keep liquid toiletries in a separate closed bag.

Are packing cubes practical in a carry-on?

Yes, and that may be where they help most. In a small suitcase, every inch counts, and you often open your bag during the trip.

Two tips:

  • Take two or three pouches, not six. Too many pouches leave gaps between them.
  • Keep the pouch with your first night's things on top.

To make sure you don't forget anything, follow our complete carry-on checklist.

Checklist: before you close your suitcase

  • ☐ One pouch per clothing category
  • ☐ Large pouches flat at the bottom
  • ☐ Shoes in a flat bag
  • ☐ An empty flat bag for dirty laundry
  • ☐ First-night pouch on top
  • ☐ Liquids in a closed toiletry bag, not in mesh pouches
  • ☐ No zipper forced shut
  • ☐ Suitcase weighed if your allowance is tight

The problem: on family trips, everyone rummages through the same suitcase to find their things. The solution: give each traveler one or two pouches with the Packune luggage organizers. They work in a gym bag too.

FAQ: your questions about packing cubes

Do packing cubes save space?

Not directly. They organize the space in your suitcase better, without adding to it. Any space you save mostly comes from how you roll or fold your clothes.

Do packing cubes make your suitcase heavier?

A little. Our set of 6 pouches weighs 310 g in total. If you travel light, only take the pouches you need.

Are mesh pouches waterproof?

No. Mesh lets air and liquids through. Keep your bottles in a closed toiletry bag.

Can you use them outside of travel?

Yes. In a gym bag, to organize a closet or to pack a child's bag. When empty, our pouches fold flat and take up little space.

Should you get some?

If you repack often, travel with others or fly carry-on only, packing cubes will make life easier. Start with a full set, and only take the pouches you need on each trip.
